Every Shopify store gets the same support questions, whatever its size. Where is my order? Can I return this? When is it back in stock? Do you deliver to Northern Ireland? A FAQ page cannot answer most of them, because the answers live in Shopify, not in your theme.
An AI agent connected to your store can. This guide covers what it should handle, how to connect it, and what to watch out for as a UK merchant.
What an AI agent should handle for a Shopify store
- Order status and tracking. The single biggest category for most stores. The agent looks up the real order and shows fulfilment status, carrier and tracking link.
- Returns and exchanges. Explain the policy, check eligibility against the order date and, if your returns app has an API, start the return.
- Stock and product questions. Sizing, materials, compatibility and "is this back in stock?", answered from your storefront content and inventory.
- Shipping and delivery. Costs, cut-off times, couriers and international delivery, answered from your policy pages.
- Handover. Damaged items, angry customers and anything unusual go to a person with the order details already attached.
Live data beats a clever FAQ
Generic chatbots trained on your website will confidently answer "where is my order?" with your delivery policy. That is not an answer. The customer wants their order.
The fix is to let the agent look things up. In Threadbox, there are two ways to do this:
- Regex webhooks match your order number format, for example
#1234, call the Shopify Admin API and return the result as a status card. No language model touches the answer, so the delivery date is always the one Shopify has. Regex webhooks are included on every plan. - Custom actions are described in plain English, such as "look up a customer's recent orders by email", and the agent decides when to call them. Actions are included on the Growth and Business plans.
Connecting Shopify, step by step
- In Shopify, create a custom app with read access to orders, products and customers, and copy the Admin API token.
- In Threadbox, add an action or regex webhook pointing at the Shopify Admin API with that token.
- Add a regex for your order number format so order lookups are deterministic.
- Crawl your storefront, policies and FAQ pages so product and shipping questions are answered from your own content.
- Embed the widget through
theme.liquidor the Shopify script tag.
For logged-in customers, pass a signed customer identifier from your theme so the agent can fetch that customer's orders securely without asking for an email address. The Shopify integration page has the details.
Beyond the storefront: email and WhatsApp
Customers do not only ask in the chat widget. Many reply to order confirmation emails, and a growing number message on WhatsApp. One agent can cover all of them with the same knowledge and the same order lookups, with every conversation landing in one inbox tagged by channel. In Threadbox, email is included from the Starter plan and WhatsApp from Growth.
UK-specific things to get right
- Consumer rights. Make sure the agent states your returns policy accurately and never promises less than the Consumer Contracts Regulations require for online purchases.
- Northern Ireland and international delivery. Customs and delivery rules change; keep them on a policy page the agent crawls, not in its instructions, so one edit updates both.
- Data protection. Order data is personal data. Check where your chatbot vendor hosts it and ask for a DPA. Our UK GDPR chatbot checklist covers the rest.
- VAT invoices. If you are VAT registered, a vendor that bills in pounds with a proper VAT invoice saves your accountant a job.
Measuring whether it works
Track three numbers for the first month: the share of conversations resolved without a person, the volume of "where is my order" emails reaching your inbox, and customer satisfaction on AI-handled conversations. If resolution is low, the usual cause is a missing lookup or a policy page the agent has not been pointed at, not the model itself.
What it costs
Threadbox has a free plan with 50 conversations a month for testing. Starter is ??29 a month for 500 conversations with the web widget and email; Growth is ??99 a month for 2,000 conversations and adds WhatsApp and custom actions. Extra conversations are billed in blocks of 100 up to a spend cap you set. See pricing or the e-commerce use case.
