Intercom Fin is one of the most capable AI agents on the market. If your team already lives in Intercom, it is the obvious place to start. But a growing number of UK support teams are looking at alternatives, and the reasons are usually the same three: per-resolution pricing that is hard to forecast, paying for Intercom seats just to get the AI, and data residency questions from procurement.
This guide sets out what Fin costs, where a flat-priced alternative makes more sense, and how to run a fair side-by-side test before you commit.
How Intercom Fin is priced
At the time of writing, Intercom's public pricing page lists seats from $29 per seat per month (Essential, billed annually), rising to $85 and $132 per seat on the Advanced and Expert plans. Fin is charged on top at $0.99 per outcome, where an outcome is a conversation Fin resolves. Fin can also run on another helpdesk, again at $0.99 per outcome with a minimum monthly commitment. Prices are published in US dollars.
Per-outcome pricing has a real logic: you pay when the AI does the work. The trouble is forecasting. A busy month, a product launch or a delivery problem all push resolutions up, and the bill follows. Finance teams used to fixed SaaS costs often find that uncomfortable.
A worked example
Take a team of three agents handling 1,500 AI-resolved conversations a month.
- Intercom Essential with Fin: three seats at $29 is $87, plus 1,500 outcomes at $0.99 is $1,485. That is roughly $1,572 a month, or about ??1,180 at current exchange rates, before VAT.
- Threadbox Growth: ??99 a month, which includes 2,000 conversations and five seats. Conversations on standard models count as one each; premium models count for more, and the pricing page shows the exact weighting.
The gap narrows if your volume is low, and every business should run its own numbers. But for teams with steady, repetitive volume, a flat allowance is usually cheaper and always easier to budget.
What a Fin alternative needs to do
Cheaper is not enough. Fin is good, so any alternative has to match it on the things that matter in production:
- Accurate answers from your own content. It should crawl your help centre and website, read PDFs and policies, and reindex when they change.
- Live data, not just articles. "Where is my order?" and "When is my renewal?" need a lookup in your systems. Look for actions that call your APIs and, ideally, a deterministic path for reference numbers so no model rewrites the answer.
- Clean handover. Rules that escalate on negative sentiment, keywords or repeated fallbacks, a shared inbox where your team picks up with full context, and the option to hand back to the AI afterwards.
- Guardrails. Blocked topics, prompt-injection checks and a fallback answer you control.
- The channels your customers use. Web chat as a minimum, then email, WhatsApp and Slack as you grow.
Where Threadbox differs
Flat GBP pricing with a spend cap
Threadbox plans run from free to ??349 a month and include a monthly conversation allowance. If you go over, extra conversations are billed in blocks of 100, and you set a monthly spend cap so there are no surprises. Prices are in pounds, and UK VAT is shown on the invoice.
No platform lock-in
Threadbox is a standalone AI agent with its own inbox. You do not need to move your marketing tools, and you do not need to buy seats in another platform to use the AI.
UK/EU hosting by default
Conversation data is hosted in the UK/EU, model providers are used under zero-retention API terms, and a data processing agreement is available on request. For many UK buyers this shortens procurement more than any feature does. Intercom offers regional hosting on certain plans, so check which applies to yours.
Deterministic lookups
Alongside plain-English actions, Threadbox has regex webhooks: when a message matches your order or reference format, it calls your system and returns the result as a status card, with no language model in between. That removes a whole class of "the AI made up a delivery date" problems.
When Fin is still the right choice
Be honest about this. If your team works in Intercom every day, relies on its product tours and outbound messaging, and per-resolution fees fit your budget, Fin inside Intercom is hard to beat. Switching tools has a cost, and the best AI agent is the one your team will actually maintain.
How to test an alternative fairly
- Export 50 to 100 real customer questions from the last month, including the awkward ones.
- Point the alternative at the same help centre Fin uses. In Threadbox, that is the crawler pointed at your public help centre URL.
- Connect one live-data action, usually order or account lookup.
- Run both agents against the same questions and score them on accuracy, tone and correct escalation.
- Estimate a month's cost for each from your real volume.
Threadbox has a free plan with 50 conversations a month, which is enough to run this test without a card. See the full Threadbox vs Intercom Fin comparison or the pricing page for current plans.
